These wastes include gases, dusts solutions, sludges, and mineral materials such as mine waste, ore processing tailings and leach residues, fly ash and slags.
These wastes can be subdivided into a number of categories: waste rock, mill tailings, coal refuse, wash slimes, and spent oil shale. The mining and processing of mineral ores results in the production of large quantities of residual wastes that are for the most part earth- or rock-like in nature.
Surface mining, being more economical and safer, is growing and replacing the deep mining which is far more labor intensive. Both types of mining produce waste heaps. Deep mining operations result in the extraction of coal and other materials which are then separated into useful product (the coal) and the waste.
